Bedeutung

Im Zuge der Gebiets- und Verwaltungsreform beschloss der Gemeinderat Ostercappeln ein Wappen in Auftrag zu geben. Den Wappenentwurf besorgte der Heraldiker Hans-Heinrich Reclam. Auf dem silbernen Halbrundschild symbolisieren die quer auf einer Achse liegenden acht roten Rauten die bis zum Zusammenschluss am 1. Juli 1972 selbständigen Gemeinden Haaren, Hitz-Jöstingshausen, Nordhausen, Ostercappeln (Samtgemeinde Ostercappeln), Broxten, Vorwalde, Niewedde (Samtgemeinde Venne) und Schwagstorf. Der schwarze Ring erinnert an das Osnabrücker Rad und kann zugleich als Anfangsbuchstaben des Gemeindenamens gelesen werden. Die Gemeinde führt das Wappen seit 1976.
