Mary Elizabeth Braddon (1835-yil 4-oktyabr — 1915-yil 4-fevral) — Viktoriya erasining mashhur ingliz yozuvchisi[1]. U 1862-yilgi shov-shuvlarga sababchi bo'lgan „Lady Audley's Secret“ romani bilan mashhur bo'lib, ushbu asar asosida bir necha bor filmlar suratga olingan.
Mary Elizabeth Braddon Londonning Soho shahrida tug'ilgan, hamda u yerda xususiy maktabda tahsil olgan. Mary besh yoshga to'lganida uning ota-onasi Fanny va Henrylar otasining xiyonati sababli ajrashishadi. Yozuvchi o'n yoshga to'lganda, uning akasi Edvard Braddon Hindistonga, keyin esa Avstraliyaga jo'nab ketadi va u yerda Tasmaniya bosh vaziri sifatida faoliyat yuritadi. Mary uch yil davomida aktrisa bo'lib ishlaydi va bu vaqt mobaynida Clara va Adelaide Biddle bilan do'stlashadi. Ular faqat kichik rollarni o'ynashsada, Braddon aktrisalik orqali o'zini va onasini boqishga muvaffaq bo'ladi. Adelaidening ta'kidlashicha, Braddon roman yozishni boshlagani uchun uning aktyorlikka qiziqishi susaygan[2].
Mary 1861-yilning aprelida davriy nashrlar noshiri John Maxwel (1824–1895) bilan tanishadi va turmush qurishadi[3].
Braddonning katta qizi Fanny Margaret Maxwell (1863-1955) 1886-yil 13-yanvarda tabiatshunos Edmund Selousga turmushga chiqadi. 1920-yillarda ular Wyke qal'asida yashar edilar, u yerda Fanny 1923-yilda Ayollar institutining mahalliy bo'limiga asos solgan[4].
Ularning katta o'g'li - yozuvchi William Babington Maxwell edi (1866-1939).
Braddon 1915-yil 4-fevralda Richmondda (keyin Surreyda) vafot etgan va Richmond qabristoniga dafn qilingan[5]. Richmond cherkovida Braddonning xotirasiga bag'ishlangan lavha ham mavjud. Yaqin atrofdagi bir qator ko'chalar yozuvchi yaratgan romanlar qahramonlari nomi bilan atalgan.
Asarlari
tahrirBraddon 80 dan ortiq romanlar yaratgan sermahsul ijodkor bo'lgan. Uning eng mashhur asari „Lady Audley's Secret“ (1862) bo'lgan[6]. Braddon usbu romanning birinchi boblarini 1861-yil iyul oyida Maxwellga tegishli Robin Goodfellow adabiy jurnalida, keyin esa Sixpenny jurnalida ketma-ket nashr qila boshlagan. Keyin „Lady Audley's Secret“ romani to'liq shaklda nashr etildi va nashr etilganining birinchi yilida to'qqizta nashr orqali sotilgan[7].
Lady Audley's Secret bilan bir qatorda, Braddonning yana bir mashhur romani Aurora Floyd 1863-yilda nashr etilgan. Unda ko'p xotinlik munosabatlarida qolgan ayol ham tasvirlanganligi sababli, Lady Audley va Aurora Floyd Braddonning „ko'p xotinlilik“ romanlari deb nomlanadi[8].
Braddon "Gerard or The World, the Flesh, and the Devil" (1891), "The Cold Embrace", "Eveline's Visitant" va "At Chrighton Abbey" nomli bir nechta g'ayritabiiy fantastik asarlar ham yozgan[9][10]. Qolaversa, Braddon tarixiy fantastik asarlarga ham qo'l urgan. In High Places asarida Charlz I ning yoshligi tasvirlangan[11]. London Pride asari esa Charlz II haqida[11]. Mohawks qirolicha Anna hukmronligi davri haqida hikoya qiladi[11]. Ishmael asarida esa Napoleon III hokimiyat tepasiga kelgan vaqtlar tasvirlangan[11].
Breddon Belgravia jurnaliga asos solgan (1866), u o'quvchilarga moda, tarix va fanga oid maqolalar bilan bir qatorda seriyali shov-shuvli romanlar, she'rlar, sayohat janridagi hikoyalari va tarjimai hollarini taqdim etgan. Shu bilan bir qatorda, u Temple Bar jurnalida tahrirchi bo'lgan.
Michael Sadleirning „O'tmishdagi narsalar“ (1944) nomli kitobida Braddonning asari haqida tanqidiy maqola ham mavjud[12]. Braddonning hayoti va faoliyatiga hurmat ko'rsatish maqsadida 2014-yilda Mary Elizabeth Braddon uyushmasi tashkil etilgan[13].
