Islom universiteti Elijah Muhammad tomonidan asos solingan. Maktabga Ilyos Muhammadning rafiqasi Clara Muhammad va Islom xalqining boshqa faxrli onalari[2] tomonidan 1934-yilda Michigan shtatining Detroit shahrida katta yordam ko'rsatildi va tashkilotning dastlabki muassasalaridan biri sifatida doimiy e'tiborda edi. Bu "matematika, astronomiya va sivilizatsiya haqidagi umumiy bilimlarni" o'rgatadigan boshlang'ich maktab edi.[3] Islom xalqi bor bo'lgan ko'plab shaharlarda maktablar tashkil etilgan. 1974-yilga kelib butun mamlakat boʻylab 47 ta Islom universiteti maktablari mavjud edi.[4]

Ba'zi olimlar Islom universiteti maktablari paydo bo'lishini qora tanli oilalar tomonidan o'z bolalarini uyda o'qitish uchun qilingan ilk urinishlar belgisi deb atashadi.[5][6]

1975-yilda otasining vafotidan soʻng, Warith Deen Muhammad Muhammad Islom universitetini otasi asos solgan universitet oʻrniga Clara Muhammad maktablariga (yoki oddiygina Muhammad maktablariga)[7][8][9][10] aylantirdi. Maktab tizimi "Amerika Qo'shma Shtatlari va Karib dengizi orollari bo'ylab taxminan 75 ta boshlang'ich, o'rta va yuqori maktablarning birlashgan ko'rinishi" dir. Amerika Ta'lim Tadqiqotlari Assotsiatsiyasi xodimi Zakiyyah Muhammad maktablarga "maqtovga sazovor natijalarga erishayotgan islom ta'limi tizimlari namunasi" deb ta'rif bergan.[11][12]

Vazir Louis Farrakhan "Islom millati"ni qayta tiklaganida, tashkilotning muassasalaridan biri bo'lgan Islom universitetini ham tikladi.[13]
