I n addition to thesettees there arealso four chairssimilarly painted,which form partof the same set.The chairs, likethe settees, haveevidently beendesigned fortheir present po-sitions beside thethree doorways,and both havesome charac-teristics in com-mon. Thoughthe chairs have oval backs, while those of the settees are rectangular,both have upholstered arms of identical form, and likewise straightfront legs, turned in exactly the same way. Moreover, the seat railshave been kept uniform throughout. The principal rooms on the east side of the house are theLibrary, the Drawing-Room, and the Music-Room. The Librarychimney-piece has been executed in white marble and yellowSienese breccia, upon which skulls of oxen and rosettes havebeen inlaid (see Fig. S3). The simply designed mahogany book-cases also add to the interest of the room. Upon the slightly pulvi-nated frieze at the top, the favourite band of fluting may be seen,but it occurs besides in the narrow margin around the panels of themahogany doors. The Drawing-Room ceiling, illustrated in Fig. 78,has been surrounded by a cove of comparatively large dimensions,similar to others of like proportions designed by William Adam morethan fifteen vears before.
