Prolaktin (laktotropin nomi bilan ham ataladi) sut emizuvchilarda sut ishlab chiqarishni taʼminlashda asosiy rol oʻynaydigan proteindir. U turli umurtqalilarda, jumladan insonlarda 300 dan ortiq jarayonlarga taʼsir oʻtkazadi.[1] Prolaktin ovqatlanish, juftlashish, estrogenlar bilan davolash va ovulatsiyaga javoban gipofiz bezidan ishlab chiqariladi. Shuningdek, u metabolizm, immun sistemasi regulatsiyasi hamda meʼda osti bezi rivojlanishida muhim rol oʻynaydi.

Proklaktin 1930-yili Oscar Riddle[2] tomonidan inson boʻlmagan hayvonlarda kashf etilgan, 1970-yilda esa Henry Friesen tomonidan insonlarda tasdiqlangan.[3] Bundan tashqari, prolaktin PRL geni tomonidan kodlangan peptid gormoni hisoblanadi.[4]
