Metro tizimilari roʻyxati — metro tizimlarining ushbu roʻyxatiga butun dunyo boʻylab elektrlashtirilgan tezyurar poezd tizimlari kiradi. Dunyoning baʼzi qismlarida metro tizimlari metro, U-Bahnen yoki subway deb nomlanadi. 2017-yil dekabr holatiga koʻra, dunyoning 56 mamlakatidagi 178 shahrida[1] 180 ga yaqin metro tizimlari mavjud. London metropoliteni birinchi marta 1863-yilda „yer osti temir yoʻli“ sifatida ochilgan va 1890-yilda[2] birinchi elektrlashtirilgan yer osti liniyasi dunyodagi eng qadimgi metro tizimiga aylantirilgan[3]. Eng uzun metro tizimi — Pekin metropoliteni[4]; eng zoʻr avtobus Pekin metropoliteni[5][6]; va eng koʻp stansiyalarga ega bu Nyu-York shahri metropolitenidir[5]. Xitoy metro tizimlariga ega boʻlgan shaharlarning eng koʻp soniga ega, 2019-yilga kelib ularning soni 40 tadan oshadi[7].

Xalqaro jamoat transporti assotsiatsiyasi (LʼUnion Internationale des Transports Publics yoki UITP) metro tizimlarini „oʻz yoʻlida ishlaydigan va umumiy yoʻl va piyodalar qatnovidan ajratilgan“ shahar yoʻlovchi tashish transport tizimlari sifatida belgilaydi[8][9]. Ogʻir temir yoʻl (asosan Shimoliy Amerikada) va ogʻir shahar temir yoʻllari atamalari asosan „metro“ atamasi bilan sinonimdir[10][11][12]. Ogʻir temir yoʻl tizimlari, shuningdek, „elektr temir yoʻl“ deb ham aniq belgilangan.
Metro va jamoat transportining boshqa turlari, masalan, yengil temir yoʻl va shahar temir yoʻllari oʻrtasidagi ajratish liniyasi har doim ham aniq emas va UITP faqatgina „metro“ va „yengil temir yoʻl[10][11]“ oʻrtasida farqlarni keltirib chiqaradi, Amerika jamoat transporti assotsiatsiyasi (APTA) va Federal Tranzit maʼmuriyati (FTA)[10][11] barcha uch rejimlarni ajratib turadi[10][11]. As example Tokyo Metro and the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Transportation's Toei Subway constitute only 22 % of the 14.6 billion metropolitan railway ridership in Greater Tokyo (MLIT Yearly Statistics). In addition, when one considers intracity lines of JR East and private railway companies, Greater Tokyo (130 lines) has higher daily ridership than any other metropolitan area in the world with 14.6 billion passengers annually. The Osaka Municipal Subway also has only a minority share of all metropolitan railway ridership in Greater Osaka, constituting only 17.6 % of Greater Osakaʼs 4.745 billion rail passengers annually in 2010. Including the municipal subway systems in both Kobe and Kyoto, the result still only comprises 22 % of all rail travel in the Greater Osaka area with 1065.8 million passengers yearly (MLIT Yearly Statistics). For Greater Nagoya, the Nagoya Municipal Subway has only a minority share of all metropolitan railway ridership in Greater Nagoya constituting only 38 % of Greater Nagoyaʼs 1.095 billion rail passengers annually in 2010 (MLIT Yearly Statistics).
